Prior to us visiting Philae Temple, our private guide drove us to the Aswan High Dam in order for us to understand the background on the relocation of this site. – UNESCO World Heritage Site website Approaching The Sanctuary of Isis – Philae Temple This outstanding archaeological area contains such magnificent monuments as the Temples of Ramses II at Abu Simbel and the Sanctuary of Isis at Philae, which were saved from the rising waters of the Nile thanks to the International Campaign launched by UNESCO, in 1960 to 1980. The UNESCO campaign protected this and other complexes prior to the completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The Sanctuary of Isis complex was dismantled and then reconstructed on the nearby Agilkia Island. In 1960, UNESCO launched a campaign that lasted two decades, which moved both Philae and Abu Simbel to higher ground. Last century these ancient Egyptian temples along the Nile River, were in danger of flooding by the rising waters of the Aswan High Damn.

Not only for the architectural wonder of these temples built for their Egyptian Gods, but for the shear fact that these temples were dismantled and reconstructed to save them.
